KL Profile FC Naming Scheme

Something Elation has been brilliant at when it comes to developing fixture lines is the naming schemes. You can fully grasp what a fixture can do from the name if you know the context. Here is the breakdown for the KL Profile FC. KL, or Elation's Key Light series, indicates a fixture produces high-quality light ideal for lighting people for performances and cameras. Profile is a pretty straightforward identifier in the lighting biz and usually refers to a fixture with framing shutters. Bringing us home is FC, or Full Color, meaning the fixture can output a full color range in addition to that KL crispy white light.

The optical system sets the KL Profile FC apart from a traditional ellipsoidal. The KL Profile FC begins with a strong RGBMA LED Engine blasting out over 10,000 lumens. But because the optical design is much more similar to a moving light, you get a homogenous color glow on the fixture's lens instead of seeing the speckles of each LED. This small detail unlocked a lot of versatility in the fixture design, as it allowed them to add extra dynamic features to the fixture.

Like all fixtures in Elation Professionals KL (Key Light) series, the KL Profile FC boasts an impressive CRI of 92, making it an above-average quality of light perfect for performances and cameras. The wide (and we mean really wide) CCT range (2400K - 8500K) allows you to adapt to any situation or design.

KL Profile FC Features

If you're in the market for an ellipsoidal-type fixture, you're looking for a workhorse fixture with output that you can manipulate and carve. Perhaps the most important feature to do that with is framing shutters. The KL Profile FC features four framing shutters that each can entirely blackout.

Manual zoom and focus are par for the course, but what is worth writing home about is the locking rotating handles that make you want to adjust the zoom and focus over and over again because it feels so right. It feels powerful to take the fixture from a narrow 6° and flood it out all the way to 50°. 😎

An iris can fit in the backend of the fixture because of the optical design. A top handle makes it perfect for easy beam control.

Included Designer Gobo Kit

The KL Profile FC ships with ten high-resolution glass gobos for your profile, and they're thoughtful textures. Conventional gobos aren't compatible with the KL Profile FC because it optically resembles a moving light over traditional ellipsoidals. Elation starts you off with this 10-pack to jump-start your creative arsenal, and you can request custom gobos of virtually any template on the market- as Elations gobo dimensions are on file with every major manufacturer.

The fact that the Gobo rotates is a powerful feature. For a fixture with static zoom, static focus, and static gobo selection - variable rotation speed gives this fixture a kinetic breath of fresh air.

Rigging & Power

Clocking in at a clunky 35 lbs, the KL Profile FC fixture isn't super easy to move around. However, some quick internet research tells us it is lighter than the only valid market comp - so we can't even honestly complain about the weight.

A handy yoke lets you attach an omega bracket with whichever clamp you need or slide in a junior pin to house the fixture on a C-stand. This design is slick here, but the only downside is accessing the bottom bolt of the clamp once the fixture is rigged if you're using a large wrench.

Data & Control

The KL Profile FC has a max draw of 358W, and you can daisy chain power and data down your fixture line. The back panel of the fixture is straightforward with 5-pin DMX in/out and IP65 locking powerCON in/out. Interestingly, the KL Profile FC is already equipped with Elation's E-FLY™ Internal Wireless DMX Transceiver... an exciting trend as wireless control continues to creep into fixture development across the board.

Depending on how you want to color mix, you have a few options when controlling the KL Profile FC. 2 DMX modes give you no color control, presumably while you take advantage of setting a static color using the back control panel and preserving DMX parameters.

Then there are three different color mixing modes, each with an 8-bit and 16-bit option. Standard mode gives you control of each LED: Red, Green, Blue, Amber, and Mint. RGB and CMY modes interpolate RGB and CMY color mixing data from the console and calculate when to include the mint & amber chips as needed.

You can also use the back panel to set each parameter manually for a simple, static set-up on the fly.

From Us

Probably the most exciting feature that we, of course, saved for the From Us section is the rubberized feet on the front lens of the fixture. The fixture features an accessory slot/gel frame on the front of the lens, as you would expect, but this fixture boasts rubberized protection on front that serves as the worlds solution to standing lekos up on the lens. Bravo Elation! 👏

Another feature we love is the handles on the back of the fixture, lending the KL Profile FC to being an ideal solution for followspots.

Lastly, an optional fresnel conversion kit is available. This allows you to essentially convert the fixture into a soft-edged ficture, but still have the flexibility offered with zoom, shutters, and gobos.
