GLP X5 Dot Wash: The Classic Birdie, Reinvented
The MR16 birdie has been hiding in footlight shells, set pieces, and prop carts for decades, and the industry has been waiting on an LED replacement that actually earns the spot. GLP thinks they have it with the X5 Dot Wash, the first static fixture in the Impression X5 family. Full color mixing, strobe, zoom, and an IP65 rating in a body exactly the same size as the birdie it replaces. What else could you need?
This little fixture is already collecting credits, too. It received its world premiere on Paddington the Musical in the West End, where Lighting Designer Neil Austin tucked field test units into footlight shells along the downstage edge. A few months later it made its Broadway debut on The Rocky Horror Show at Studio 54, where Lighting Designer Jane Cox ran 30 of them as recessed footlights on a production that picked up a Tony nomination for Best Lighting Design of a Musical. We have even see it on the festival circuit with Lorde. Not a bad first year for a fixture you can hold in one hand.
More Than a Footlight
The theatrical debuts tell one story, but do not let them pigeonhole this fixture. A fully color-calibrated wash the size of a birdie has range far beyond the footlight shell. Think about set integration on pop and touring shows. A unit this small builds directly into set pieces, band risers, stair treads, and scenic columns, and because it speaks the same iQ.Gamut language as the X5 washes and bars overhead, the glow inside the scenery matches the rig without a color correction session.
Museums, interactive exhibits, themed entertainment, and immersive theatre are just as strong a fit. The Dot Wash is silent, sealed, and cool running, which matters when the audience is standing next to the fixture instead of forty feet away. IP65 also means an exhibit piece can be wiped down daily without anyone worrying about the electronics inside.
Then there is the simplest use case of all: real light for low ceilings. Under balconies, basement venues, corporate spaces, and clubs where a conventional fixture would bump heads, the Dot Wash tucks into places nothing else fits. Add broadcast detail work, DJ booths, trade show scenic, and both indoor and outdoor architectural accents, and the spec sheet starts reading less like a footlight and more like a utility knife.

At the core of the Dot Wash is a single 40W RGBL LED pulled straight from the impression X5 platform, delivering up to 550 lumens. The iQ.Gamut color algorithm handles calibrated color mixing, defined white points, and the finely graded pastels this engine is known for, and a Color Boost function pushes extra output into deep saturated colors when you need the punch.
The white light is the headline for us. This engine renders skin beautifully across all skin tones, which is exactly what you want from a fixture that spends its life pointed up at faces from the front edge of a stage. Add 16-bit dimming with a clean curve and you get smooth fades with none of the stepping that gets a footlight noticed for the wrong reasons. Color mixing and strobe control round out the channel layout.
X5 Dot Wash Versatility: Adjustable Zoom, IP65, Lightweight
16 to 68 Degree Twist Zoom
The Dot Wash zooms from 16 to 68 degrees, and the mechanism is one of our favorite details on the fixture. Twist the front lens and the beam changes, with no change to the physical size of the unit and no swapping filter discs. GLP also claims output stays nearly stable across the full zoom range, which is not something conventional mini optics can say.
IP65 Rated for Indoor and Outdoor Use
The whole package is IP65, sealed against dust, moisture, and whatever else a deck gets covered in. That opens up temporary outdoor work, architectural detail lighting, and any position where fixtures get abused.

The external power supply is a real workflow advantage, not a compromise. The fixture runs on 24 to 48V DC through a single combined power and data cable tail, so you run slim cable to the units and stash the power supplies somewhere out of the way. When you are drilling a small hole through a stage deck at the last minute, a tiny cable instead of a bulky fixture-mounted PSU is the difference between an easy install and a carpentry conversation.
Mounting is just as flexible. There is a combined hanging and floor stand yoke, plus 3/8" and 1/4"-20 threads to bolt it directly to whatever you are building it into. And if you want the classic birdie look, an optional adapter takes standard birdie accessories like barn doors and top hats.
