PreVis & Chill: How 4Wall Gives Festival Productions a Leg Up

There is a part of festival programming that does not make the highlight reel. You inherit a rig you did not spec, you get a changeover instead of a soundcheck, and the first time you see your looks might be on the actual fixtures with an audience already filming TikToks. There is no dress rehearsals. And the clock that runs a festival does not care that you have never driven this exact package before.



Everything that can go wrong lives in the gap between your programming at home and the real rig. The fixtures might be hung at angles you did not expect. The trim might be different. The truss positions, the dimmer they swapped at the last minute, the fixtures that did not make the truck, all of it hides in that gap, and on a festival you usually find it out the hard way. 4Wall's PreVis & Chill exists to close that very gap before you go live.


How 4Wall's PreVis & Chill Works

So how does it work? We had the opportunity to take the PV&C trailer for a spin this year at Bonnaroo 2026, and are excited to take you through how frictionless the process is and how much of an advantage it can give you. To begin, you dont have to go searching for sign-up links, because they go out with the festival advance. Book your previs time before you leave home. You claim a slot, you show up, and during that window the suite is yours at no cost.


That matters more than it sounds. Festival prep normally happens in stolen minutes, and the rig itself is the bottleneck because everyone needs it and nobody gets it for long. By moving prep off the stage and into a bookable suite, 4Wall takes the one resource everyone fights over and clones it. You are no longer waiting for the deck to clear or for the act before you to finish. Your prep is scheduled, protected, and yours, which on a festival day can be close to a miracle.


Lighting World: Two Full-Size Consoles, Loaded and Patched

Inside the trailer were two full-size grandMA3 consoles. Not onPCs, not lites on a folding table, full-size desks. Every executor, every fader, every encoder is where it will be come showtime, so the muscle memory you build in the suite is muscle memory you keep at the stage.



Each console had with Depence files built to match the real rigs (shout out to Max Lennox), with accurate fixture orientation and correct patch. You load your show file and the 3D environment in front of you reflects what you are actually walking out to. The files were prepped per stage, and 4Wall provided paperwork in the trailer that carried every change made to the rig since the advance. If a fixture moved, patch got swapped, or the mode had to be changed at load-in, that update was sitting in front of you.



Also, ACT Entertainment was on site for grandMA3 support (shout out to Julia Hajjar), so when someone hit a wall with a phaser, a recipe, or a stretch of syntax they do not touch often, there was an expert right there to work it out. Accurate previz plus live programming help, for free, is not something the industry hands out often.


Video World: NDI Input and Pixel Accurate Mapping

The suites were not a lighting-only affair, and this is where it gets genuinely useful for the entire team. With an NDI input feeding realtime visuals, the video programmer can manage their mapping, test their content, and confirm it reads the way it is supposed to before a single pixel hits the stage.


The bigger win is independence. Team video can program their own show without stepping on what lighting is doing, and lighting can build without waiting on video. You can share a suite and work side by side, or take separate suites and run in parallel. Either way, two departments that normally have to negotiate over the same stage and the same clock get to work at full speed at the same time. That is time you simply do not get back during a changeover, and it is the kind of thing a first-time festival LD does not realize they needed until they have lived without it. With realtime visualization for both departments, you can run the entire show timecode and make sure its happy, or you can both simulatenously busk and rehearse taking your moments.



The Chill Part: Somewhere To Breathe

Then there is the "& Chill" part. Outside the trailer, 4Wall ran a full grill. Glizzys, hamburgers, brisket, ribs, and BBQ chicken for anyone with time (and trust us, you want to make time). Add cornhole, cold drinks, and other crew to stand around with, and you have something a festival almost never offers.



It is easy to write this off as the fun part. A festival day is a string of small fires with nowhere to go between them, and that low-grade stress compounds until it shows up in your show. PreVis & Chill gave crew somewhere to gravitate when they had nowhere else to be. A place to eat, and reset.


Why A Leg Up Is The Whole Point

Strip away the food & cornhole, and the through-line is confidence. Confidence going into a show, especially on a quick turnaround, comes from reps, and reps are exactly what festivals refuse to give you. When a programmer has already loaded the file on a full-size desk, watched the timecode, busked alongside accurate video, and talked the tricky MA3 moments through with ACT support standing next to them, they walk up to the console a different person. The first-timer who would have been discovering their rig in front of the crowd has now already met it.

That is the part we want more vendors to notice. Plenty of companies say they support the people who run their gear. 4Wall built the room, loaded the consoles, staffed the programming help, dialed in the video, and fired up the grill. That is support you can sit down inside of, and it sends a whole production to the stage with a real advantage.
